Yes, Mt. Hebron High School is having some, not so nice to deal with, septic issues. The older county schools are showing their age. Is it better in the long run to renovate or to build an entirely new high school to replace Mt. Hebron?

As a current MTH student, our voices need to be heard. The board of education does not sit in a 40 year old school for 180 days a year. They do not know the extreme circumstances of the situation. However, ask any student, teacher, or parent and they will tell you that in the long run, a new school would be the greatest investment the county has ever made.
As far as anyone knows, the renovation calls for a new band wing, a new dance area, a replacement gym and several other changes to the face of the school. However, the renovation plans do not call for a change in the sewage system or a fix in the electrical system. This year alone, there has been three sewage leaks, one of them being during our 5th period mid-term. Who really wants urine running down the walls or dripping down out of the ceiling, or nasty brown water coming out of a lab sink during the test? There was also a sewage problem just a few weeks ago with a sink upstairs. My history teacher this year started a contest between her two GT classes but couldn't think of a reward because of the "no food in the classrooms" rule. The only thing she could come up with was water bottles as a prize, but only as a joke. Then, took back the joke part and decided that's not a bad idea at all, considering the fact that the water from the water fountains is usually brown. For everyone's sake, all the teachers, staff, and students warn their peers not to drink from our deteriorating school's water fountains, which should be completely sanitary. In addition to the overly mentioned sewage problems, there have been several incidents when the lights in the hallways have not been lit, creating a dark hallway for students to walk in between classes. Also, we had a power-outage early in the year and even left school early. Could this possibly have caused the various climates in our school? One area of the school might be a comfortable 70 degrees, while another area might be a highly uncomfortable 75 or even 80. Why even bother to mention this if you don't also mention the fact that at the same time of the 75 degree rooms, there were also some rooms that continue to be at 60 or 65 degrees in the beginning of February. This is insane. There is snow on the ground and i am sweating in my 5th period class everyday, and have been since September. Ask anybody in my Algebra class and they will tell you of the horribly uncomfortable temperatures we have been experiencing in there.
Personally, I speak for the entire student body of Mt. Hebron by saying that WE NEED A NEW SCHOOL!!!! I also speak as a Class of 2010 student hoping that i will get the learning environment I deserve to be taught in for the next three and a half years.
I, being a soon to be Mount Hebron student, can not stand the thought of trying to learn in such an environment! The way things are going now with the sewage problems, rat infestation, and many other assorted problems Mount Hebron is having, the school is about to fall apart! The fact that, when students chose to share their video of what happened to their school, the entire board of education got up and left because if they didn't see the video which showed the urine dropping from the ceiling, which they had minutes earlier denied, then they didn't have to admit it was real. This kind of immature action shows me that they don't deserve to be where they are. If they'll only deal with the problems they want to, and are too stubborn to admit they're wrong, then they don't deserve to make descisions that affect anyone, especially not children whose lives are in the making. We deserve a better board of ed. who will actually listen to our problems and try and help us. Although the grant is excessively much, it is needed. Mount Hebron wasn't built as a high school. It was a middle school. It was meant for fewer students. In the hallways, you have to hold on tight to all your belongings so that you don't drop them when you run all the way across the building through massive throngs of people. Also, some of the teachers are very traumatic. They have competitions to see who is the most hated, and set up webcams pointed straight down at female students. These students have been through more then enough. I don't want to graduate from the building they have to live most of their waking life in. I want a decent building. I don't want to be disgusted whenever I sit down in the band lounge, or feel scarred whenever I'm walking around the hallways, and the ceiling might let loose its contents. I don't want to be shoved into crowded hallways, and then be blamed for being late. I want a new building. The board of Education is in charge of making decisions for the good of students and their education. Having Feces and urine dropping on my head and bubbling out of the sink would disgust me to the point of not being able to concentrate, as I'm sure many others. Also, the Board must know that we are their future. We will run the world. Do they want a bunch of uneducated leaders? They should listen to what we, the students, have to say about this. The Board of Education disgusts me.
What makes MTH any more worthy than another older school with problems?
How about school vouchers? Make MH compete. If they don't measure up, go elsewhere.
