SIMS is out of Control

Once again SIMS is not meeting the needs of the HCPSS students. This email originally appeared on the Howard Public Education newslist.

Interim Reports will be handed out today to all students. Because of issues with the school system's computer program, the reports this quarter will be hand written. We encourage you to review your child's interims and contact their teacher's if you have concerns.

That just came from the Glenelg pta. This is unbelievable! This software should have never been implemented when it did. I have a background in Computers (Right now studying Computer Forensics) and work for a company PT that does Bus routing and driver selection software for some systems in Maryland like Harford County. The following is the flaws I see..

1. $650,000 is way over priced for a piece of software that does not work.
2.There should have been a study on IT infastructure whether or not HCPSS could handle.
3. The system can't do what it is suppose to which is track interim grades for students and report card grades. Look @ above example.

The current board should be held accountable for this debacle.

Yes, I had heard a rumor about this last Tuesday night at the Mayfield Woods Town Meeting. I didn't want to comment since I thought someone in the system definitely should have by now. It is very odd that no one in the system came forward with this information. The one story that was relayed to me by a third party was that one teacher was spending 10 minutes of every class period filling out report cards.

This is precisely the reason why we need Board of Education members
outside of the current system that will really represent the interests of students, parents, teachers and the community.

I have scanned and posted the results of my Public Information Act (PIA) request for extensive information about ongoing problems with the Howard County Schools (HCPSS) Student Information Management System (SIMS) online. Anyone concerned about the ongoing problems with SIMS can view and download the 370+ pp. on my campaign web site:

http://www.lawlab.com/campaign/

At the index page, click on the red, white & blue “SIMS Documents” button at the right and middle of the page. Pages can be downloaded in 25 page bundles.

OMG, SMS was unplugged before the beginning of school and had nothing to do with grades. It was the antiquated Grade Transporter program that failed and could not produce interims. And now Grade Transporter is failing again, its just a matter of time.
