Some students will move, some won't move

This year's round of school redistricting is over. Some parents are happy their children are moving to the Veterans Elementary. Some other parents are happy their children aren't moving to different schools.

Redistricting Sense

Hmm. Seems that we are starting to see the light. Busing students when they live right across the street from the new Northeastern Elementary School doesn't make financial or common sense. The same sort of thing is also planned for the Glenwood Middle School area. No wonder parents are upset with this kind of redistricting plan.

Candidates Talk about Redistricting

OK, it's almost crunch time! Read more about the BOE candidates and what they think about redistricting. Made up your mind yet on BOE candidates?

Unless there are some missing pieces that I don't know about, why do kids that live across the street from a school get bused miles away? Wouldn't that naturally imply that the previous redistricting was either in error or was a result of poor planning?

Growth & Schools

Growth is an issue that is hard for our schools to predict. Maple Lawn is quickly being developed (take a drive and see for yourself) and will put further pressure on Reservoir High, which already has one of the largest high school student populations. Will BRAC families overburden this area of Howard County?

New Redistricting Plans - Lots of Kids Moving

The new school redistricting plan will be voted on by the current Board of Education in the end of November. For now, please read these stories:

Parents: Redistricting could harm students, friendships - The Baltimore Examiner

Schools prepare to shift pupils - The Baltimore Sun

County Reveals Redistricting Plan for 2007-08 - The View from Ellicott City

1269 elementary and 217 middle school students will be moving to different schools for the 2007-2008 school year. It just seems odd that students across the street from a school (i.e. Glenwood Middle or new Northeastern Elem) will be going to schools much farther away.

To see the Feasiblity Study that details the redistricting plans

Some numbers

Elementary Schools
153 students Hollifield Stn to St. John's Lane
105 students Northfield to New Northeastern
33 students Northfield to Thunder Hill
35 students St. John's Lane to Centennial Lane
453 students St. John's Lane to New Northeastern
147 students Waverly to St. John's Lane
193 students Worthington to New Northeastern
84 students Bellow Spring to Waterloo ES
66 students Bryant Woods to Running Brook MS
Middle Schools
118 students Elkridge Landing to Mayfield Woods
99 students Glenwood MS to Folly Quarter MS

Your thoughts? What will BRAC or Town Center development really do to school enrollments?
